Middletown Public Library Circulation Policies

Borrowing with the Cooperating Libraries Automated Network

Any resident of Rhode Island with proof of address is eligible for a free card. Children may apply for a card when they are 5 years old or able to print their name. A parent's or legal guardian's signature is required for children 12 and younger. 

Middletown Public Library is a member of the Cooperating Libraries Automated Network (CLAN).  CLAN is a consortium of 49 public library systems in Rhode Island linked through a state-wide communications network using the Millennium automated catalog system. This network provides access to over 4.4 million items owned by the consortium to all of the citizens of Rhode Island. 

By using terminals in the library, you can search for resources available at the Middletown Public Library and the other member libraries. You can use your library card to reserve popular titles, and to request items through the interlibrary loan program. The CLAN library card will also give you access to many full-text databases through our search page.

Circulation Procedures

The loan period for all circulating materials, excluding videocassettes, DVDs, and passes is three weeks. Items loaned for three weeks may be renewed once, as long as no reserves have been placed on them. All materials may be returned in the outside book drops. The overdue fine for for these materials is 10 cents a day.

Videocassettes and DVDs are limited to four per library card. They are checked out for one week with no renewals. The overdue fine for videos and DVDs is $1.00 per day per item. Videocassettes and DVDs may now be returned in the new outside book drop for media next to the library entrance.

Renewals and Reserves

Items may be renewed or reserved either in person or by telephone. When renewing materials by phone, please have your library card number and the titles of all items to be renewed. We do not renew by telephone without your library card number.
